Delete your Aera account
Last updated: September 27, 2026
You can close your Aera account yourself, from inside the app. If you cannot open the app, you can ask us to close it from this page. Either way, this page explains what happens when you do and what we are required to keep. Please read it before you start.
The Aera app is made and run by Aera Health LLC.
How to delete your account in the app
This is the main way to close your account. It takes about a minute.
- 01
Open the Aera app
Sign in the way you normally do.
- 02
Go to Settings, then “Close my account”
The control is named “Close my account” and sits on the main Settings screen — closing your account is how you delete it. You do not have to go through Help or call anyone.
- 03
Read what is kept
The app shows you what closing your account does, what we keep, and for how many years. Take a moment with that screen — the numbers there are the ones that apply to you.
- 04
Enter the code we text you
We send a code to the phone number on your account and ask you to type it in. We ask for it because closing an account is permanent — you cannot undo it by signing back in.
- 05
Confirm
Tap the confirm button. You are signed out on every device right away. The rest of what happens is described below.
What deleting does
When you confirm:
- You are signed out on every device.
- You cannot sign in again.
- Your name, phone number, and email address are removed from the app — see “The first 30 days” below for when.
- Family members you shared with lose access.
- Your rehab program ends.
- Your care team stops receiving your daily check-ins.
What we keep, and why
Closing your account does not delete your health record. The law and our agreements with your hospital require us to keep medical records, so we keep yours as a sealed record — intact, closed to ordinary use, and opened only for a documented reason.
- We keep your health record — your check-ins, breathing numbers, assessments, and your messages with your care team.
- We keep it for the number of years the law and your hospital’s agreement require — usually 7 to 10. The app shows you that exact number before you confirm.
- Only your care team and our compliance staff can see it, only when there is a documented reason, and every look is recorded.
- The record of who opened your information, and when, cannot be erased.
- We keep the record of the consents you gave and the ones you took back.
- If you reported a side effect or a flare-up, that report stays in your safety record.
- Our secure backups still hold a copy for a short time. Backups are kept for 7 days and age out on their own.
- When the required years are up, we securely destroy the record.
What deleting does not do
We would rather you know this before you decide than after.
- It does not change or remove anything in your doctor’s or your hospital’s own records. Those records are theirs, and they keep them under their own rules. If you want something in your hospital record corrected, contact the hospital directly — you have the right to ask them to correct it.
- Information already sent to your care team stays with them. We cannot pull it back.
- Family members who saw your information before you deleted your account already saw it.
- It does not cancel your appointments.
The first 30 days
Your account is closed as soon as you confirm, and you cannot sign back in. On or after 30 days, your name and contact details are removed from the app and moved to a sealed store that everyday staff cannot reach. We say “on or after” because that step runs as a daily job — it can land a little later than the 30-day mark, never earlier.
If you change your mind, contact our privacy team within those 30 days. Restoring an account is only possible during that window, and only after we verify who you are. Signing back in will not restore it.
If you are feeling worse
Deleting your account is not a way to reach your care team. If you feel worse, call your care team — and call 911 if it is an emergency. Deleting your account does not cancel your appointments, and it is not a substitute for talking with your care team about your treatment.
If you are a family member with your own login
Family caregivers have their own accounts. Closing yours removes your access to the person you were supporting, and we tell them that your access has ended. It does not close their account or change their record. If you want to stop seeing their information but keep your account, the person you support can turn off sharing in their own Settings at any time.
Ask us to close your account (if you cannot use the app)
Email our privacy team at info@aerahealth.us and tell us you want to close your Aera account. This is the web request path, and it does the same thing the in-app control does.
Please include:
- Your full name, as it appears on your account.
- The mobile phone number you use to sign in.
- A sentence saying you want to close your Aera account.
- A phone number or email address where we can reach you to confirm it is really you.
We confirm who you are before we close an account — usually by texting a code to the phone number on the account, or by asking about details only you would know. We do this to prevent someone else from closing your account. We act on verified requests promptly and answer every request within 45 days. Your request goes to our Privacy & Security Officer, Ricky Yau.
When your account is closed we send you a written confirmation saying what was closed, what we are keeping and until when, and the date by which you could still ask us to restore it.
Website and marketing information is a separate request
Closing your account and asking us to delete your website or marketing information are two different requests, with different scopes. Contact-form messages, access requests, and waitlist entries are genuinely deleted when you ask, and we tell our service providers to delete their copies too. Your health record is not, for the reasons set out above and in our privacy policy — that is a legal-obligation exception under California law, not a refusal. To make a website-information request, email us with “California privacy request” in the subject line and say what you want us to do.
Clinician and staff accounts
If you are a clinician or work for a clinic that uses Aera, your account is managed by your organization and cannot be closed from inside the app — the notes you write are part of your patients’ records. Ask your administrator, or email us and we will work with them.
